Merry Catmas…

I was standing by the stove, stirring a pot of yummy Cincinnati chili, when I realized the “tinkle tinkle tinkle” of Christmas tree ornaments was more persistent than usual. Glancing over my shoulder, I discovered a new ornament on my tree:

It was only a matter of time. I’m surprised it took Mischief a full week to get herself into that predicament. (If it had been Mayhem, the tree would be horizontal. So far, so good…)

Update 12/24/06, 4:45 pm: upon returning home from some aimless Christmas Eve afternoon gallavanting, we discovered evidence (fallen ornaments, flattened branches, and tufts of belly fur) that she had climbed to within 18 inches of the top. See the white envelope above the cat? See the red thing a few inches higher and to the left? Yep. That far.

I’ve never had a cat climb a Christmas tree. Really. That is a total of five non-climbing cats.

A cat who doesn’t climb? No way. Even Mayhem joined to party, but he was too big to get beyond mid-height before the branches refused to hold him.

OMG. I’m now giggling uncontrollably. Thankfully, I didn’t have a coffee in my mouth when this came up!

I hoping our tree is sturdy enough

Sometime in the next six months we’re getting a couple of kittens. however, our tree is a fake, sturdy one with its own lights.

When we got our first tree, a leftover from mom, in the 2200 house, we put it up with nothing on it, just put up the tree and went to bed. Got up, no problem, it was okay (Aja was about 2, Temme was about one, our first cats…). It was a very thin tree with very few branches.

Came home from work, the top segment was in a u-shape, pointing floorward. The rest of the branches were pointing down, parallel to the wood stem.

We had garlands with ornaments on the mantle after that… until we moved over to the 1109 house. We didn’t have Temme anymore but we had Melisande and Aja. Roh’s tree was a sturdier one, and maybe because the cats were older (Aja would have been about 11, Melisande about 6) they didn’t molest it. We left it up 24 hours before putting anything on it to give everyone a chance to check it out.

We had pretty good cats there, Ferg was not a climber, Badb isn’t either (she has shorter legs than average….). Angelina would be hard pressed to go downstairs to even ‘see’ the tree because she’s scared Badb will ambush her.

    We’ll see what happens.

    Good luck!

Re: I hoping our tree is sturdy enough

Mayhem couldn’t stand it anymore and started climbing the tree, but he’s just too big and couldn’t get very far. By the way, I owe you a new cat dancer when you get the kittens. Mischief simply will not part with the one you brought over.
