So the doc called this afternoon with my lab results from Wednesday… and told me to high-tail it to the ER. Abdominal pain and a high white cell count — she’s thinking appendicitis. Great. Just Great. So… I went.
For future reference, let me just say that if you’re dehydrated and you have small, highly mobile veins, do not under any circumstance let the student nurse try to insert the IV. Trust me on this. After five tries and two and a half nurses, they finally got an IV inserted, enough blood to test, and a place to insert saline and pain meds.
And also for future reference, when the doc asks if you want something for pain, don’t ask for Tylenol. (Especially after he pokes you in the kidney and you nearly jump off the table.) He laughed and suggested something stronger.
The verdict: kidney infection. Joy. But it could be worse; it could have been the appendix.

September 15, 2007 at 5:03amI’m almost tempted to say congratulations on the kidney infection. Appendectomies are no great fun. But whatever, get well quickly and enjoy the drugs.
And the next time you’re offered something for pain, ask for the full bong.

September 15, 2007 at 1:45pmI was going to say something comparable to what Robin said, but he said it better than I would have.
I know I’d much rather be cured with pills than with a knife. Get well soon.

September 16, 2007 at 7:56pmThanks, and I’ll certainly choose pills over the knife if given the option. Before I had to consent to the gallbladder removal a few years ago, I said no one was gonna cut on me without a warrant. đŸ˜‰
